The Siege of the Waters of the Cerrado

Documentary series

Synopsis

The Cerrado, known as the "water box of Brazil," holds a vital secret for the nation. Housing the sources and riverbeds of eight out of Brazil's twelve hydrographic basins, it plays a crucial role in maintaining the country's water resources. However, the Cerrado is in danger.

This documentary series explores the challenges faced by the Cerrado, one of the most threatened biomes in South America. The relentless expansion of the Brazilian agricultural frontier, driven by agribusiness and government policies, is leaving deep scars on the Cerrado.

Through striking images of the past and present of the Cerrado biome in three regions – Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest – and five states – Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Goiás (and the Federal District) – and through interviews with conservation activists, community leaders, regulatory public agency officials, local small farmers, and residents of the regions, this series aims to shed light on the challenges faced by the biome and highlight the importance of its preservation, not only for biodiversity but also for the survival and well-being of communities, as well as Brazil's water future. The series serves as a warning for the protection of this vital biome.

Through five pre-selected locations – Bonito/MS, Correntina/BA, Cocalinho/MT, Guarda-Mor/MG, and Planaltina/GO/DF – where the Cerrado has been suffering from the rampant advances of agribusiness.
