Connected Indigenous
Documentary Series in Development
Synopsis
The series "Índios Conectados" features several indigenous characters who create and access new fields of technological expression and artistic interaction with national society in defense of their rights. The innovative aspect brought by the series is the reaffirmation of the image and strength of contemporary indigenous peoples, revealing experiences of using new communication technologies and the possibilities offered by the digital universe in defending their rights, valuing their culture, and maintaining and strengthening their identities. The main contribution and innovative aspect brought by the series "Índios Conectados" to the Brazilian public is the updating of the image associated with contemporary indigenous peoples, deconstructing a deeply rooted misconception in common sense: that an indigenous person who lives in the city, takes on roles, and/or makes use of technological tools is an acculturated indigenous person, one who has distanced themselves from their culture. Or, in summary, an indigenous person "who is no longer indigenous." It is important to understand that biculturalism does not make them any less indigenous and that they will increasingly be empowered by the access of new generations, who master both the codes of their culture and those of national society. Filmed in a direct cinema style, the series follows the characters immersed in their day-to-day work and activism. Ailton Krenak, the protagonist of the first episode and an inspiration for the new generation of connected indigenous people, will be the interlocutor for the characters in the other episodes. Through his dialogue with the protagonists of each episode, we will understand where these young people came from, their connections to the indigenous world, how they built their work and activism spaces, and what their future projects and goals are.
