The Other Side of Paradise

Feature film

Synopsis

A 12-year-old boy narrates the adventures of his father, an idealistic dreamer, in 1960s Brazil. They leave the countryside of Minas Gerais for Brasília, recently inaugurated but still under construction. Driven by the desire for professional advancement and to participate in the construction of the new capital, Antônio, his wife, and their three children embark on a journey to the country's capital. Caught up in the political turmoil of the period and the reforms promised by then-President João Goulart, Antônio encounters political activism and the agitation of workers. Then comes the military coup. Dreams turn into nightmares overnight. An effervescent chapter of the country's history told through the dreams of a family from rural Brazil.

The film contains unseen footage of the 1964 Military Coup, which had been kept hidden for decades. Furthermore, 'The Other Side of Paradise' marked the return of productions from the Cinematographic Hub of Brasília after being closed for 12 years.
